[May. 20th, 2009|06:57 pm] |
I LOVE people who graded my research proposals. THANK YOU for being so generous and understanding. and I owe my profs who wrote recs for me, THEY ROCK.
NSF is funding my lab, so I get to keep my job. Yay for population genetics, database management, mapping, and niche modeling. Nay for not having a job that would let me draw at night without feeling guilty about not working/studying/writing up that senior thesis for publication... |

| produce vs. create |
[Mar. 24th, 2009|09:59 pm] |
There's a clear line between producing and creating art. I think I have always leaned quite heavily on the producing end. It's not that I don't want to create, but the barrier between paper and the image in my brain. On a side note, I miss drawing and I miss figure drawing in Berkeley.
"The link between my brain and paper is broken, and it's time to shoot the messenger." - smashmethod. |

| omnivore's dilemma |
[Mar. 22nd, 2009|01:15 pm] |
I finally finished reading Omnivore's Dilemma, yay! Waiting for people to return their library copies sucks, so I gave in and bought my own copy. The week before Joel Salatin (a farmer mentioned in the book) gave his talk at Stanford, I asked around to see if anybody might want to go to the talk with me. When I mention this book to people who haven't heard of it, a few of them asked if it's about converting people to vegetarians... It's not and it's a fun read. I didn't know Michael Pollan was a Berkeley journalism professor until Laur brought it up, but now he sets a high bar for Berkeley prof's books. I am gonna read Nature in an Age of Global Warming next. It's written by Anthony Barnosky, one of my favorite profs in paleoecology ; )

| the only things that count |
[Mar. 10th, 2009|11:41 pm] |
I forgot why I logged on facebook, but I saw Cass' page and her quote:
Growing up, my parents always said, 'You will leave this world the same way you came into it: with nothing.' It made me realize that the only things we do in this world that count are those things that make the world a better place for those who will come behind us. ~ Tyrone B. Hayes |

Lunch break~
For January reading, I finished Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. This is the first and only self help book I have read so far, and I think it's pretty good :) ( spoiler? )
I'm still working on Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan (pg 300 or so). If you live in the United States, I'd recommend this one. I'm not vegetarian, and I don't think I will become one (so long it's a symbiotic relationship). but gosh, the meat and processed food I eat are GROSS (and unnatural and inhumane)... I think I will cut back on those as much as I can ;__; Lunch break is over... more on this awesome book later.

| sexy career |
[Jan. 7th, 2009|08:20 pm] |
For all the people who are going through the stress to stay in academia...
MSN's 10 Sexy Careers You Never Thought Of "10. University professors Behold the power of intellect: Someone who wasn't even on your romantic radar suddenly becomes the target of your affection when you find out he or she is intelligent -- or at least could be. Being a professor doesn't make anyone an automatic genius, but chances are these academics have expertise in at least one field, can speak a second or third language and have ambition (seeing as they spent a hefty portion of their time earning a few degrees). Plus, if anyone can make glasses go from nerdy to sexy, they can."

Ray linked me a part time job, but it says "If you have too much on your plate (full time student extra job slaying dragons in the evenings), you should not apply for this job. It takes a lot of time to become a true Faerie"
I disqualify! :'( ...because I kill too many dragons at night!

I asked Willy if the area I will be staying at in LA is safe, and he linked me a newspage:
"One year, we had almost 106 homicides in eight square miles," he says from the intersection of 7th Street and Alvarado."
okay, that's the exact intersection... |

| In loving memory of |
[Apr. 22nd, 2008|07:17 pm] |
my sweetest pet and friend (and roommate), Chibi.
She's not just any furry friend. She's cute, kind, and smart. She helped me go through my hardest time in college, yet she left so suddenly.. I should have known earlier - I shouldn't have attributed her crankiness to her potential allergy or blaming her gentle bite on the fruit-smelling hand soap I used. Sorry, Chibi. (I'm not having another pet until I have trust for doctors and vets, have a huge yard, and can ensure that I will always have time for myself and my loved one).
I hope that she rests in peace, with all her favorite food, water, beddings, and toys; but without any pain or suffering. Thank you, Chibi. |

[Apr. 2nd, 2008|05:41 pm] |
I WANT TO DRAW BETTER
and we all know that sitting on my ass can only do so much for helping me to level my drawing skills. WE NEED TO ELIMINATE EXCUSES MAKERS, i.e. work, research, sleeping, checking facebook/LJ/DA... therefore I'm going to work on my research/presentation now.
If you have any other leveling tips, please share. |

"Berkeley, the famously liberal college town in California, has taken aim at Marine recruiters, saying they are 'not welcome in our city.' Republican lawmakers in Washington fired back this week, threatening to take back more than $2 million of federal funding to the city as well as money designated for the University of California-Berkeley"
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/02/07/berkeley.protests/index.html
I don't necessarily agree with the Berkeley message, but... Oppressing expression of opinions, and taking funds away from already under-fund research institution is WAAAYYY cool! It's better than addressing Washington concern directly to Berkeley local government. Attack UC Berkeley is the thing to do (even though it's not a student-run protest)! especially when none of the Republican lawmakers' sons are in the marine ;) |
